Practical Cyber Security for Small and Medium Businesses

Plain-language security assessments, system hardening, backups, access control and staff awareness for SMEs that need sensible protection without enterprise overheads.

Threats & controls

Common risks and how we reduce them

  • Phishing and fake invoice emails

Email filtering settings reviewed, multi-factor sign-in enabled on mailboxes, and short awareness sessions showing staff what real examples look like.

  • Weak or reused passwords

A clear password policy, a shared password manager for teams where suitable, and multi-factor authentication on critical accounts.

  • Ransomware and accidental deletion

Scheduled backups with at least one copy kept separate from the main network, plus regular test restores so recovery is proven, not assumed.

  • Unpatched devices and software

An inventory of devices, automatic updates where possible, and a plan to replace systems that no longer receive security fixes.

  • Former staff and excessive access

Joiner and leaver procedures, role-based permissions on shared drives and business apps, and periodic access reviews.

  • Exposed routers, Wi-Fi and remote access

Default credentials changed, unnecessary services closed, guest Wi-Fi separated, and remote access moved behind secure connections.

Most breaches start with something ordinary

For a small or medium business, a security incident rarely begins with a sophisticated attack. It usually begins with a reused password, a laptop that has not been updated for months, a former employee whose email account still works, or a convincing invoice email that someone opens on a busy afternoon. These are ordinary gaps, and they can be closed with ordinary, well-organised work.

That is the kind of cyber security ZAS TECH focuses on. We look at the systems you already have, find the weak points that matter most, and help you fix them in an order that makes sense for your budget and your team. We do not sell fear, and we do not bury you in jargon. You get a clear picture of where you stand and a practical list of what to do next.

What we mean by practical security

Practical security is about reducing risk, not chasing perfection. No business can remove every threat, but most can make themselves a much harder target than they are today. Our work usually covers five areas:

  • Assessment: a structured review of your devices, accounts, network, cloud services and day-to-day habits.
  • Hardening: tightening configuration on computers, servers, routers and business applications so they expose less.
  • Backups and recovery: making sure important data is copied regularly, stored safely and can actually be restored.
  • Access control: deciding who can reach what, and removing access that is no longer needed.
  • Awareness: helping staff recognise phishing, suspicious requests and unsafe shortcuts.

How an engagement typically runs

We start with a conversation about how your business works: which systems hold sensitive information, who uses them, and what would hurt most if it stopped working. From there we carry out the assessment, either on site in Islamabad or remotely for clients in other countries, and write up our findings in plain language.

Each finding is ranked by how likely it is to be exploited and how much damage it could cause. Some fixes take minutes, such as turning on multi-factor sign-in for email. Others need planning, such as replacing an unsupported server or reorganising shared folders. We can carry out the remediation ourselves, guide your in-house person through it, or work alongside an existing IT provider.

Where security meets your network

Many security problems are really network problems: flat networks where every device can see every other device, guest Wi-Fi that shares a segment with accounting machines, or routers still running factory settings. Where this is the case, we often combine security work with our computer networking services so that the fixes are built into the network design rather than added on top.

What you receive

At the end of an assessment you receive a written report with a short summary for management, a detailed list of findings, and a prioritised action plan. Where we carry out hardening or backup work, we document what was changed so your team understands it and can maintain it. If you choose ongoing support, we can revisit the plan periodically, review new systems before they go live and refresh awareness sessions as staff change.

What we do not claim

We want to be clear about scope. Our service is practical security improvement for SMEs. It is not a formal compliance audit, a certification programme or an accredited penetration test. If your sector or a customer contract requires one of those, we can help you prepare and get your basics in order first, and we will tell you honestly when a specialist accredited firm is the right next step.

If you would like an honest view of how exposed your business is today, get in touch with our team and tell us a little about your setup. We will suggest a sensible starting point.

Assessment

How a security assessment works

  1. 1

    Scoping conversation

We learn how your business runs, which data matters most and which systems you depend on, so the assessment focuses on real risk.

  2. 2

    Inventory and discovery

We list devices, accounts, cloud services and network equipment, because you cannot protect what you do not know you have.

  3. 3

    Configuration review

We check settings on computers, servers, routers, email and key applications against sensible security practice.

  4. 4

    People and process review

We look at how staff share files, handle passwords, approve payments and report problems, as these habits drive most incidents.

  5. 5

    Findings and action plan

You receive a plain-language report with each issue ranked by risk and effort, and a suggested order for fixing them.

  6. 6

    Remediation and follow-up

We can implement the fixes, support your team while they do, and revisit the plan as your systems change.

  • A written plan for what to do if something goes wrong

Benefits

What you get

  • Clear priorities

Instead of a long list of worries, you get a ranked plan that shows what to fix first and why it matters.

  • Proportionate cost

Recommendations are sized for an SME. We favour settings and habits you already have access to before suggesting new spending.

  • Faster recovery

Tested backups and a simple incident plan mean that if something does go wrong, you know how to get back to work.

  • Confident staff

Short, practical awareness sessions help your team spot suspicious messages and feel comfortable reporting them.

  • Plain language throughout

Reports and conversations are written for business owners and managers, not just technical specialists.

  • Works with what you have

We can support your in-house IT person or existing provider rather than replacing them.

FAQ

Cyber Security: common questions

Is cyber security really necessary for a small business?

Yes. Smaller businesses are often targeted precisely because their defences are lighter. Automated attacks do not check company size before trying stolen passwords or sending phishing emails. The good news is that most of the risk can be reduced with sensible basics such as multi-factor sign-in, updates, tested backups and tidy access permissions. These steps are affordable and make a real difference.

Do you provide penetration testing or compliance certification?

No. Our service is practical security improvement: assessments, hardening, backups, access control and staff awareness. We do not offer accredited penetration testing, formal compliance audits or certification. If you need one of those for a contract or regulator, we can help you get your foundations in order beforehand and will be honest about when an accredited specialist firm is the right choice.

Can you assess our systems remotely?

In many cases, yes. Cloud services, email platforms, user accounts and many device settings can be reviewed remotely with the right access. Some checks, such as physical network equipment or office Wi-Fi layout, are easier on site. We work from Islamabad and serve clients in Pakistan and internationally, so we will agree the most practical approach for your location during the scoping conversation.

Will security changes disrupt our daily work?

We plan changes to keep disruption low. Quick fixes are usually invisible to staff. Changes that affect how people sign in or share files are explained in advance, scheduled at a sensible time and rolled out in stages where possible. We would rather introduce a control gradually and have staff accept it than force a change that people then try to work around.

What happens after the assessment report?

You decide how to proceed. Some clients ask us to carry out all the fixes, others have an in-house person who uses the report as a work plan, and some combine both. We can also offer ongoing support, which typically includes periodic reviews, checks on new systems before they go live and refreshed awareness sessions when your team changes.

How do you handle backups if we already have some in place?

We review what exists rather than starting again. We check what is being backed up, how often, where the copies are stored and whether a restore has ever been tested. Often the gaps are small, such as one important folder being missed or all copies sitting on the same network. We then recommend targeted changes and help run a test restore to confirm everything works.
